Kamakura is an ancient capital where the first samurai government was established in the late 12th century. It is surrounded by mountains and sea and retains much of historical assets as well as spirits of Zen culture.
Kamakura is accessible in about one hour from Tokyo either by train or car. Please be noted that there are some parts that you are supposed to walk during the tour.
Sample Itinerary (10-hour tour)
Start the tour at Great Buddha of Kotokuin Temple, the most iconic symbol of Kamakura. The statue of the Buddha is 13.35 meters tall.
Then visit Hasedera Temple. The highlight is the golden eleven-faced Kannon statue. If interested, experience either Shabutsu (Buddha image tracing) or Shakyo (Hannyashinkyo sutra copying) using Japanese brush, which is believed to bless yourself.
For your lunch, we can recommend traditional Shojin ryori which is vegetarian cuisine originally thrived by Zen priests. Or, you can try local restaurants serving international foods loved by Kamakura residents.
After the lunch, you will be escorted to Hokokuji Temple, a Rinzai sect zen temple established in 1334, known as "Bamboo temple". The rock garden with the background of bamboo grove is the must-see.
Then walk to Jyomyoji Temple, as one of the five great (highest ranked) temples of Kamakura. It is nice to unwind for a while enjoying the green tea served at the tranquil Japanese garden.
Make your way to Komachi Dori shopping street with traditional Kamakurabori wooden carvings, souvenirs and local delicacies. Lastly, explore Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, dedicated to the guardian deity of the Minamoto shogunate family. The shrine attracts over two million people during New Year holiday who wish to pray for their prosperity and health for the New Year. You might encounter traditional wedding ceremonies in the premise.
Return back to your hotel in Tokyo (approximately 1 hour).
