Historical Cypress Path is a part of old Tokaido Road which used to play an important role to connect Kyoto, ancient political capital, with Edo, modern-day Tokyo, during the feudal Edo period. Take a pleasant walk, starting at stone-paved path, leading to main street in Moto Hakone area with 350 year old cypress trees.
Sample Itinerary (11-hour tour)
In the morning, meet your guide at your hotel in Tokyo and move to Shinjuku Station by train or subway. From Shinjuku, take an express train "Romance Car". You will reach Hakone area within 2 hours.
After arriving Hakone area, visit Hakone Checkpoint which was an inspection facility originally built in 1619, located on the Tokaido Road linked Tokyo and Kyoto. Hakone Checkpoint had played an important role to keep the city of Edo safe by controlling arms shipment and people who were against the government during the feudal Edo era.
If time permits, it is fun to visit Hakone Yosegi-zaiku studio, a traditional inlaid and mosaic woodwork developed in wooded Hakone mountains. There are many different hand crafted items such as trays, chest, and boxes with puzzle available in the store.
Then, move to Hakone Shrine, a 1,200-year old Shinto shrine situated on the shores of Lake Ashi. The shrine buildings are hidden in the dense forest area but are well advertised by its huge red gate ways; one standing in the lake and two others over the main street of Moto-Hakone.
For lunch, your guide will recommend a local eatery around Moto-Hakone area.
Continue the tour with going across Lake Ashi on a large sightseeing boat. Lake Ashi is famous for its impressive view of Mt. Fuji greatly harmonizing with Hakone's abundant nature. Enjoy a half-hour cruise from Moto-Hakone Port to Togendai Port while admiring the majestic view from the special cabin.
Upon arrival at Togendai port, transfer to Hakone Ropeway to Owakudani. From the gondola, the magnificent view of Lake Ashi, Hakone mountains and even Mt. Fuji can be enjoyed.
Stop at Owakudani, an area around the crater which was created by the last explosion of the Hakone volcano about 3,000 years ago. White steam vapor and hydrogen sulfide is constantly coming out from more than 80 holes. Here, try black egg cooked with the steam of Owakudani. It is said that if you eat one black egg, you can extend your longevity by seven years.
At the terminal station of ropeway, transfer to Hakone Cable Car to Gora. Then, move to Hakone Open-Air Museum by Hakone Tozan Railway.
Hakone Open-air Museum was founded in 1969 as Japan's first outdoor museum of art, making the most of its beautiful natural surroundings. 120 masterpieces created by modern artists such as Rodin, Moore, Taro Okamoto, etc. are scattered around the vast garden area. Enjoy a leisurely stroll and encounter the captivating artworks.
Return to Hakone Yumoto Station by Hakone Tozan Railway. It is the oldest mountain railway in Japan. The train makes its way down the mountain in a zig-zag line, changing direction at switchbacks where the driver changes the shift. Enjoy the view from the window while the small train runs through a densely wooded mountains and many bridges over the valley.
From Hakone Yumoto Station, return to Shinjuku station by Romance Car, then take train or subway to your hotel.
Note for Hakone Tozan Railway: Operation of Hakokne Tozan Railway between Hakone Yumoto and Gora has been suspended due to the damage caused by typhoon 19 in October 2019. Operation will be resumed in the end of July 2020. Until then, you will move by substitute buses between Hakone Yumoto and Gora. |
