Uchiko

Uchiko is a traditional local town located in the southwest part of Ehime. This town was thriving in the 18th and 19th centuries due to their production of traditional wax, and is still full of nostalgic scenery transporting visitors back in time. There are many authentic merchant houses dotted all around the town, and some of them are put to use as cafes, museums or for handiwork.

Kamihaga Residence is opened to the public as a wax museum where you can learn all about Uchiko's wax industry and production. Besides the museum, there is a beautifully maintained house with a gorgeous traditional garden which offers a glimpse of prosperous family's life back in time.

Another symbol of Uchiko is Uchiko-za theater built in 1916. This unique multi-story wooden building was originally used as a theater for Kabuki, and now is a versatile local venue. You can explore its elaborated theater equipped with trap doors, hidden entrances or passageways for the kabuki production.

Ozu

Within 30-minute drive from Uchiko, Ozu is a historical castle town which also boasts nostalgic townscape with alleys of traditional buildings, and is known as the Little Kyoto of Iyo (Iyo is the old name for Ehime Prefecture).
Ozu Castle is a symbol of Ozu which was rebuilt in 2004 based on the original 17th century model with using traditional construction methods: without nails or concrete. Inside the castle buildings, there are exhibits about the history of Ozu and displays of armors of the feudal lords.

Take a walk through the charming streets of the old town to Garyu Sanso which is an authentic and artistic villa sitting atop cliffs overlooking Hijikawa River. This villa was built around 1907 and carefully designed by the traditional architecture method as well as Japanese aesthetics. It has a thick thatched roof and simple yet subtle tatami rooms. Perfectly landscaped moss-covered garden adds to the charms of the villa. Take time to soak in the tranquility in this hidden gem of Ozu.

Uwajima

Located in the southwest of Shikoku, Uwajima is a city that is rich in unique natural beauty, history, and local agricultural and fishing industry. It is home to Uwajima Castle, among 12 only existing original castle towers in Japan. You can visit some of the local family businesses, such as pearl farm, sea bream farming and orange orchard. Uwajima is still essentially off the radar for many international (and Japanese) tourists, but this city and surrounding smaller sceneries offer a great off-the-beaten track experiences.
