Teshikaga is a town located in the eastern Hokkaido, surrounded by rich nature. Lake Mashu, one of the world's clearest lakes and Lake Kussharo, the largest caldera lake in Japan, are located in Teshikaga. Kushiro River, which 80% of water source comes from Lake Kussharo, has very clear water, so it attracts canoeists from all over the world. Not only these sightseeing spots, there are many lesser-known nature spots to enjoy, which makes Teshikaga a hidden gem for nature lovers who would like to spend time in a tranquil atmosphere. Summer in Japan can be a very challenging season to travel for most foreign travelers due to the humid weather, but Teshikaga has a nice, cool climate with interesting activities, so you can enjoy a "cool" vacation in Teshikaga. Star gazing is conducted throughout the year and sea of clouds can be seen from June to October.

For people who would like to spend time feeling relaxed in a peaceful environment, canoe at Kushiro River is highly recommended. Having gentle flow, which is rare in Japan, Kushiro River provides a perfect place to enjoy tranquil moment during your trip. Many travelers come in the summer, but the scenery of colorful leaves in the autumn and mysterious diamond dusts in the winter are equally stunning. Don't forget to bring your camera to capture these breathtaking moments.

Gourmet

Hokkaido is generally known for its fresh seafood, but Teshikaga has more variety of flavorful, locally grown food products thanks to the significant temperature gap between the summer and the winter. Mashu Wagyu Beef are raised in Teshikaga, where they were surrounded by rich nature. If you like noodles, try Mashu Soba, carefully sun dried and produced to maintain its high quality. Surprisingly, mango is locally grown here in Teshikaga in the greenhouse using the heat from hot springs. Come to Teshikaga to enjoy local gourmet that will entertain your palate.

Lake Mashu
Lake Mashu is a mysterious site which has another name as the "Lake of God". The water is so clear that it reflects the color of the blue sky, which is called "Mashu Blue". There are 3 observatories around the lake to enjoy the panoramic view. In the early morning from June to October, a sea of clouds can be enjoyed here if the weather permits.

Mt. Io*
Having the name "Atosa-nupuri" in Ainu language, meaning "naked mountain", Mt. Io remains an active volcano. As soon as you arrive, you will notice the unique smell of sulfur. When you get close to the fumarole, you can see the yellow sulfur crystals and the streams coming out. This is also one of the important sites in Teshikaga as it has supported the development of Kawayu Hot Spring by providing hot spring water and sulfur, which resulted in establishing the second railway in Hokkaido as a mean to transport sulfur to a finery. At the rest house, learn about the history of Mt. Io and try the Hot Spring Egg cooked using the heat coming from Mt. Io. There is also a walking trail from Kawayu Eco Museum Center to Mt. Io while enjoying the natural scenery.
*Currently, climbing Mt. Io is not allowed, but Teshikaga is now in the process of making eco tours with nature guides.

Lake Kussharo
Lake Kussharo is the largest caldera lake in Japan and there are many hot springs around the lake. It is a popular spot in the summer for people to enjoy outdoor activities such as camping and water sports. As it never freezes even in the winter, you can see swans traveling from Russia to Lake Kussharo and rest their wings.

Kawayu Hot Spring
There are several hot springs in Teshikaga, and Kawayu Hot Spring is one of the best hot springs in Japan for its hot spring water quality. The hot spring water comes from Mt. Io. As the hot spring water quality is strong acidic, it is said to have various medicinal effects such as curing skin problems. Heal your body and mind soaking in Kawayu Hot Spring.
