Kamakura 1 Day Tour (Sample)
Kamakura, the first shogunate esablished in 1192 and continued until 1333, is a popular day trip desination from Tokyo. With many temples scattered around the town, it is a little too big to cover on foot, but there is a nice network of buses that goes to the popular sites. However, if budget allows, it is easier to go around Kamakura by chartering a taxi for the day.
Arrive in the northern part of Kamakura, where you will find abundant natural greenery. Visit the first Zen temple built in in Kamakura, and the oldest Zen training monastery in Japan. (On Fridays and Saturdays from 5 pm, you can sit in Zen meditation at the temple)
Move to an important shrine, dedicated to the patron god of Minamoto clan, the shogunate famlily. The shrine attracts million of visiors on New Year's and is a popular place for traditional weddings.
Visit the simbol of Kamakura, the great buddha, which is 11.312 meters high and made with 121 tons of copper. The huge wooden hall that housed the statue was washed away by a tsunami, and was never reconstructed, which left the statue in open-air.
Move to the eastern part of Kamakura, an off the beaten tourist track worth visiting. You will find narrow paths cut through solid rocks. These paths were the only way to go in and out of Kamakura, so it was a way to protecet the town from outsiders.
Lastly, visit a very tranquil Zen temple with a beautiful bamboo garden. Enjoy green tea served at the temple.
